Community Houses

A Loneliness-Fighting IRL Third Place Movement Owned by You

Third Places: Everyday Community House design concept. Created by Shelly Turner Designs.

Community Houses

Everyday Community Houses are “third places” that provide our members with social, cultural, recreational, and civic activities. They are unique multi-purpose gathering spaces that will be located in exurb and rural areas that provide access to calm, serene settings with fresh air and lush scenery. While they are private, members-only spaces, Everyday Community Houses are inclusive based on the 7 Cooperative Principles (Open to All).

Our members experience meaningful in-person interactions with real people (IRL) who share are passionate about building modern social infrastructure that addresses our collective, urgent needs related to climate change, democracy reform, and mental health.

MEMBER EXPERIENCE

Community Houses across the U.S. will look slightly different; however, the experiences our members have will be virtually the same. Our goal is to create a unique blend of familiarity and comfort with a splash of local flair. Our research indicates this will be especially important and valuable for our members who:

  • Serve in the military

  • Are young adults who leave home to further their education at a trade school, community college, or a four-year institution

  • Are religiously unaffiliated (Nones) who want to connect with others who share their interests

  • Families who move for work and are away from their closest relatives, friends, and support networks

ACTIVITIES

Community Houses will provide our members with access to a range of activities, including:

  • Life skills training

  • Wellness events (e.g., peer support sessions led by certified experts)

  • Co-working space

  • Guest speakers

  • Game nights

  • Dances

  • Live music

  • Community dinners

  • Roller skating (outdoor and covered)

Why Social Infrastructure?

In 2017 we asked ourselves…

  • Is it possible to build a world-class company that’s democratically owned by its workers and community that converts screen time into social impact capital?

  • Is it possible to use that social impact capital in a way that brings people together virtually and in person in an exciting, sustainable way for the greater good?

Today, we know the answer is yes. In 2025, we’re going to show the world how we’re going to do it together.

Social Infrastructure for Life’s Best Moments

Everyday addresses the following two (2) calls to action issued by the U.S. Surgeon General (Dr. Vivek Murthy) and his team of experts in their May 2023 report to address our epidemic of loneliness and youth mental health.

FRAMEWORK

National Strategy to Advance Social Connection (see excerpts below)

CALL TO ACTION: STRENGTHEN SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Social infrastructure refers to the programs (such as those provided by volunteer organizations, sports groups, religious groups, and member associations), policies (like public transportation, housing and education policies), and physical elements of a community (such as libraries, parks, green spaces, and playgrounds) that support the development of social connection.

Here are three key ways individuals, organizations, and governments can work together to strengthen social infrastructure in local communities:

  1. Design the built environment to promote social connection

  2. Establish and scale community connection programs

  3. Invest in local institutions that bring people together

CALL TO ACTION: REFORMED DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTS

We must decide how technology is designed and how we use it. There are many ways to minimize harms. Here are three key ways that governments and technology companies can work together to reform digital environments to foster positive social connection:

  1. Require data transparency

  2. Establish and implement safety standards

  3. Support development of pro-connection technologies

HOW EVERYDAY HAS PREPARED & ANTICIPATED THIS HISTORIC MOMENT

Since 2017 this is how our team has focused our energy. We spoke with hundreds of people of all ages from different walks of life and got to work in anticipation of this call to action for researchers and tech companies. It’s the reason why we’re here now raising our hands to let you know we have an exciting, unique way to forces for the greater good.

Third Places Built With Social Impact Screen Time

No one wants the safety of our adult neighbors and kids to be at risk or for their mental health to be damaged - in person or online. Our team remains hopeful that new laws will be passed to strengthen online privacy and safety standards, especially for kids. However, our online safety problems are so pervasive that we simply cannot wait for political solutions.

This is why we’re making it easy for you and your family to take control over your online presence and do it in a way that has a major impact on your local community as well.
